MARKO TAMM
Founder of LarsenB
Marko Tamm lives in Viimsi near Tallinn; he is co-owner and managing director of Veega Group OÜ (www.veega.ee) and founder of LarsenB, where the most sophisticated search and rescue boats in the Baltic Sea are manufactured (www.larsenB.com).
In the last cohort that still went through the schools according to the Soviet Russian system in their entirety, Marko also experienced the transition from communism to the EU economy as a personal liberation: suddenly nothing was the same as it had been learned, but the new had not yet arrived either. Everything had to be learned or created in young Estonia! – Since private shipping was forbidden during the Soviet era, the stock of private boats was confiscated and the purchasing power was very modest anyway, but the sea was enticing and the joy of maritime experiences was blazing, a new market was opening up here. Marko learned to understand these mechanisms and, after a few years, set up an antique boat business and gradually came into contact with a huge market on his own doorstep: The Finnish clientele appreciated being able to obtain good craftsmanship at an attractive price – Helsinki is just a stone’s throw away by speedboat, simply on the other side of the Baltic Sea – and Marko began to organise and offer what they wanted.
